How to become a ZooKeeper!

For the past couple of months we have been trying to make our Facebook and Twitter accounts more personal, in an effort to allow you, our readers, fans, visitors and friends to get to know our staff. When you come in the Reptile Village Zoo door with your excited faces we want you to feel like you know the person greeting you at the entrance (or at least feel like they are a familiar face). So over the next couple of weeks we will be trying to give you a mini bio on each member of staff to help you out with that!

As for today….the blog has been taken over by the birthday girl..allow me to introduce you to Megan..shes such a hard worker, hardly ever takes breaks and…..

Megan Tayto Pet Expo

……oh wait a minute!

Hi guys!

As you already know my name is Megan, and I am the current manager/publicist here in Reptile Village Zoo! Firstly, that picture was taken at the 2012 Pet Expo in Punchestown, and was taken by James (our boss) as he was eating his tayto too…we were on our break!

I guess I’ll start at the beginning of my time here in Reptile Village, which was waaaaaaaay back in 2008! I was in 5th year in school and as part of our LCVP programme I carried out work experience here for a week. Pretty soon after this week I quit my supermarket job and applied for weekend and Summer work here and I haven’t looked back!

Megan School Tour 2009

In the beginning I was the only girl working here and I was also the youngest and I wouldn’t have had it any other way, being ‘one of the boys’ was something I was used to and not being afraid to get my hands dirty helped a lot when working with animals!

I dived right in and began learning as much as I could about all aspects of the business, school tours, bookings, dealing with families, animal care and maintenance and it was (and still is) a work environment that is ever-changing, ever- expanding and always teaching me something! There is literally never a dull moment in here, one day you’re cleaning animal mess and the next you’re swimming with Alligators or assisting with TV interviews.. but we’ll get to that soon!

I have worked here for a little over four and a half years now and being honest, I’ve grown up here. When I started out I was a sixteen year old girl who’s career options were becoming a pathologist or a mechanic, but Reptile Village changed all of that. My love of organizing things especially events began to show and I found myself more and more fascinated by the marketing, public relations and business side of things, so I have since completed a BA (Hons) in Public Relations and Media Studies in I.T Carlow.

People are often surprised when they ask where I work because I am quite a girly girl, loving shoes, shopping, reality TV, make up and fashion and those interests don’t quite match up to being a Zoo Keeper. But that’s me! I get asked a lot about why I chose to work here and am I not afraid of the animals. The reality is that I already had an interest in reptiles since I was a kid, always wanting a pet snake and couldn’t walk past a pet shop without going in, and the main reason why I chose to work here is because I am always learning in here. I learn about new animals all the time, I get to experience new things like marketing meetings, business ventures, event management, I have traveled to schools and colleges all over the country with our ‘Zoo to You’ team, I’ve been on TV with this job, I’ve worked with so many amazing animals and amazing people here, and so many more life experiences that not many other 20 year olds have, it never ceases to keep my interest!

Reptile Village became such a big part of my life that when I spent Summer 2012 in California guess where I ended up working….yep a Reptile Zoo! I loved every minute over there, learned a lot and met some great people but I’m not gonna lie, it was difficult to get used to being in a similar work place without the people I was so used to working with! But as you can see in the picture of all the Reptile Zoo staff a the OC Fair, I managed to fit in eventually!

Megan OC Fair Staff Picture

The reason I was allowed (they didn’t have a choice really) to take over this blog this week is that tomorrow (Friday) is my 21st birthday, I was hoping to have some pictures of my latest adventure before today but they aren’t back yet. Last week I got to swim with our American Alligators!! I was so excited as they have lived here for 3 years now and I never quite found the time! It really was an amazing experience and I will definitely do it again!

Anyway I hope I haven’t bored you too much, and if anyone is interested in a career in Reptile Village or is just generally interested in reptile village, or needs help for a school project or anything you think I may be able to help with, just email [email protected] and I’ll be happy to help!

There are many ways to get started on your career as a zoo keeper and you’ll start to realize that as each employees story is told through this blog over the next few weeks..trust me they’re worth the read..everyone got here so differently which just goes to show you that just because one way doesn’t work out for you, there are always other options!

Thank you for reading my ‘ how to become a zookeeper ‘ :)

Extra, Extra..Read All About it as we bring you Reptile Village News!

The past ten days have been so busy for all of the staff in Reptile Village and this blog post is about to get you up to speed, so below you will find 5 Reptile Village News stories:

1) We are sad to be officially closing down our group page on Facebook after more than 3 years in action, this week (January 31st at 6pm). However we are excited that all of our Facebook friends will be together on one page, the much busier ‘like page’ and this is the main reason for the closure of the original group.

(Link below is to our ‘Like Page’)

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Reptile-Village/156500504404384

We want to make sure that our messages reach everyone, so you can all get our updates, pictures, take part in competitions and know exactly where our ‘Zoo to You’ team are travelling to..which brings me nicely to my next news piece!

2) Our ‘Zoo to You’ teams are set for a busy 2013 as bookings have come flooding in (enjoy that pun for the miserable rainy day that we’re having)! Bookings are filling up fast for events such as Communions, Confirmations, Birthday Parties and Family Fun Days/Festivals!

If you are interested get in contact asap so you won’t be disappointed!

PS, watch this space…we may also have some huge news on the pop up zoo our ‘Zoo to You’ team travel with very soon..but ssssssh!

James, Bosc Monitor, Family, Raheny Family Fun Day

3) This weekend we welcomed our first EVER official members and we are so excited! We began offering annual membership to our visitors waaaaaay back in September 2012, right around the time when things get quiet in here. So you can imagine our excitement at having the first family annual membership spot filled this weekend!

Its only €120 for 2 adults and 3 children and allows you up to 12 visits per year..which is a huge saving of over €200!!!

4) It is intern mania this year too! Lately we have gotten more applications for volunteer work, TY work placement, and third level internships than ever before! We are so grateful for all the extra help and wanted to take this opportunity to remind you that if you are over 18 you are eligible to volunteer here or carry out work placement for college! If you are 16+ you can take part in our TY work experience programmes too!

Melanie and Tarantula September 2012

These programmes are a great way to gain some experience working with animals and working in the tourism sector and many of our current employees started out here on work placement schemes, including Marie who is studying vet nursing (which makes her a huge asset to us). Rob who is studying business and Megan (who is our current manager) both began here as TY work experience students!

You can apply via email; [email protected]

Okay so seeing as I can’t reveal all about some of our upcoming events and offers number 5 is just for fun:

5) Our gorgeous Royal Pythons were too busy to eat for us last weekend and there were a lot of excited faces around here when we discovered why…they were mating! We have never had baby Royals (aka Ball Pythons) in Reptile Village before and we are hoping this is another first for us in 2013! Needless to say, our female royal pyhton is being watched round the clock by our team, making sure she is as comfortable as she can be, in the hopes that she has lots of eggs in her ever expanding tummy! I’ll keep you posted on this!

But seriously, who wouldn’t want some cute baby versions of this:

Is swimming with Alligators on your Bucket List?

This time of year brings with it lots of talk about new years resolutions and phrases like ‘new year, new me’ and ‘this will be the year I… (insert goal here, lose weight etc) ‘ but how many people actually stick to them?

In Reptile Village there has been talks of charity work we would like to get more involved in, travel, marathons but mostly ‘bucket lists’. The bucket list thing has come about as Megan (the chatterbox of the team) made her bucket list recently and won’t stop talking about it, swimming with our Alligators is on her list and this gave us an idea; it must be on other people’s bucket lists too, so lets help them out!

Zoo director James likes to get in with Battle and CC from time to time, usually just to check them out for any health issues or to fix a problem with their enclosure..and occasionally just because he can or because its Christmas..like below:

Zoo Director James Hennessy with Battle and CC

Do you think you’re brave enough to take the plunge?

Here is what you need to know:

You will get a detailed safety briefing, crocodilian handling session using our Caiman Crocodiles, access to the zoo after hours for you and 4 guests, certificate on completion, minimum 15 minutes swim time with the Alligators!

American Alliagtor, Battle

Go on, be brave…we dare you!

A voucher for this experience would also make a great birthday/valentines/Christmas present too!

Alligators Bellowing

Female alligators normally initiate mating. The slight rise in temperature and increase in water level usually sets off our gators bellowing. The female normally starts first and the male responds. The bellowing can be “felt” more than heard and is similar to the way thunder vibrates. The subsonic sound can make the water jump on their backs.
